Opportunity Snapshot

This position offers you the opportunity to represent multimedia solutions from the dominant advertising channel in the region -- it is well known in the area that if you want effective advertising, you advertise with the Victoria Advocate. At the same time, we are a smaller paper, meaning that your ideas will be welcome and won't get bogged down in layers and layers of bureaucracy. While it's no secret that the newspaper industry as a whole is facing challenges, the "sweet spot" in that landscape is mid-sized family-owned papers like the Advocate, and we're one of the few. This role involves very little overnight travel, although you will spend a good portion of your time in the field.

You'll focus on building new business, including consulting with customers, developing sales proposals, and delivering presentations. While the ideal candidate will have three years of successful advertising sales experience, we are open to sales professionals from other industries or even recent college graduates. The key will be your passion for sales as well as for our products, and your ability to thrive in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment. We're looking for a highly motivated professional with a strong work ethic, personal integrity, and an organized and detailed approach.

The Victoria Advocate is the market's dominant provider of relevant and compelling content. We delivery timely and accurate information to consumers, and we deliver targeted audiences to advertisers across multiple media. If you're not already familiar with Victoria, we enjoy a strong sense of community, a reasonable cost of living, and a positive economic outlook.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • The persistence and perseverance to drive all aspects of the sales cycle, from sourcing and cold calling to closing deals.
  • Experience in consultative sales.
  • Proven relationship-building skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to produce results within tight deadlines.
  • A team player approach.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A professional demeanor and appearance.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
Preferred but not required:
  • Experience in a newspaper or broadcast advertising environment.
  • A history of success selling multimedia advertising products.
  • A bachelor's degree.
  • Bilingual Spanish and English skills.

What's in It for You

Market leadership -- the Advocate dominates this market for a couple of key reasons. First, Victoria is just a little to far from either Austin or San Antonia for us to have any competition from media in those markets. Second, television and cable are both weak in this market. As a result, our sales team earns some of the best compensation in the area.

Professional development -- we make a significant investment in training on an ongoing basis, including structured training and one-on-one coaching from both internal and contracted trainers. We are willing to "grow our own" when we find sharp people with who have the potential to manage deadlines and deliver results.

Career growth -- your success in this role could set you up to pursue a number of paths within our organization. We hire with an eye on the future and bring in new talent whenever we spot it. This creates an environment full of new ideas and fresh insights, backed by the stability of a 163-year-old company. Our current owners are strongly opposed to selling the company, and they get expert strategic advice from a board of directors made up of individuals with deep business experience.

Excellent compensation -- we offer a base salary plus both commission and goal-based bonuses, and we have a guarantee plan to help you get up to speed. In addition, our benefits package includes a 401(k) plan; medical, dental, life, and disability insurance; two weeks paid time off during the first year; and more.

A great place to live and work -- Victoria is one of Texas' oldest cities, with a population of about 62,000. It is the cultural, historic and economic hub for the area, with many major retailers plus the University of Houston (UH) at Victoria and The Victoria College. We're within a two-hour to drive of Austin, Houston, San Antonio and Corpus Christi, and just 30 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. The area's economic outlook is upbeat: UH is getting ready to transition from a two-year program to a four-year program, and plans are underway to build a new power plant nearby. Victoria recently ranked #5 on a list of the top 10 markets in which real estate values are increasing.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

Depending on your experience and aptitude, you might join any one of three our ad sales teams: Retail and Web, Niche Products and New Product Development, or Automotive and Real Estate. You'll report to one of three Ad Directors, but these three teams work closely together, and you'll sell all Advocate products. Your focus will be on developing new business, although you may take over an existing territory, and your mission will be to consult with customers regarding how they should spend their advertising dollars for optimum impact.

While there will be the occasional one-time sale, we'll look to you to promote multimedia campaigns that deliver your customer's target audience. You'll work one-on-one with decision makers and draw from our portfolio of print and digital products, including classifieds, inserts, special promotions, special sections, magazines, books, and multiple web properties. The sales cycle tends to be fairly fast and, as a producer of daily content, deadlines are an important part of life here.

Your specific activities will include:
  • Prospecting for new business to build an active account list.
  • Cold calling and knocking on doors.
  • Developing sales proposals.
